About

Unanimous Verdict

Unanimous Verdict is a historical novel.  As such, some characters and events were real, but many are a product solely of the author's imagination.  Unless the reader knows something mentioned is true based of other sources, he or she should assume anything described in Unanimous Verdict is not true.

Sources on the Historical Links page of this site provide the actual history of several subjects addressed in the book.  We recommend readers with a greater interest in these subjects begin there or at their local library.  Several recommended books are at the Book Store.  Click here.

The best non-fiction account of Brown v. Board of Education and the civil rights legal struggles leading to it is Richard Kluger’s Simple Justice (Vintage Books, 1977).  It is available in paperback.   Buy it at the Book Store -- along with Unanimous Verdict.

The reader is cautioned that Unanimous Verdict contains offensive language of the times -- 1954 and earlier -- consistent with the characters.  This includes ugly racist words and vile references to women. I have tried to keep all of these offensive descriptions and words in the context of the times and of the characters that use them.  However, it is suggested that the book is not suitable for readers under 16. I hope the reader will understand.  Thank you.  James A. Kidney
